What is Sumo?
Sumo is Japan's national sport with a history of over 1,500 years and is also an important traditional ritual. Wrestlers compete on the ring by demonstrating skill and strength, and the winner is the one who forces their opponent out of the ring or onto the ground.
Six official tournaments (Honbasho) are held annually, and the January, May, and September events take place at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, the sacred ground of sumo. From Yokozuna (Grand Champion) to the lowest ranks, wrestlers battle fiercely in a hierarchical system, making this venue a must-visit for sumo fans. The Kokugikan also houses the Sumo Museum, where visitors can explore the sport’s rich history and culture.
More than just a sport, sumo is a sacred tradition that embodies Japanese spirituality and aesthetics, captivating audiences worldwide.
