Making a new booking
  • What are the price categories for children?

    Standard Price Categories (A through D) for Children

    • Child A (Gradeschooler) : Bedding and, if the offer includes meals, adult meals (reduced portions/items) provided.
    • Child B (Preschooler): Bedding and, if the offer includes meals, special children’s meals provided.
    • Child C (Toddler): Children not yet enrolled in elementary school; bedding only, no meals provided.
    • Child D (Baby): Infants (Neither bedding nor meals provided)

     

    Depending on the property (excluding properties where children are not allowed), in some cases the prices for children in each category may not be set.

  • How do I make reservations including infants/children?

    Please enter the number of children in the search parameters and make your search or reservation.
    An explanation of the price categories for children can be found below.

  • Can I contact Customer Support to make my booking?

    We do not accept booking requests by phone or e-mail. Please make your booking through JAPANiCAN’s website.

  • How far in advance can I make a booking?

    It is possible to book accommodations up to 185 days in advance. Please note that this may vary depending on the property or room plan you wish to book. If you are unable to make a booking for your desired dates, either the property has no openings or it is not yet accepting bookings for your desired dates. Please check the site again at a later date or make a booking for a different room type.

  • How do I change the number of guests on my booking?

    It is not possible to add guests beyond the room’s set capacity. If the new number of guests exceeds the room’s capacity, please cancel the existing booking and make a new booking with the adjusted number of guests and rooms.
    Please be aware that due to real-time changes in availability, it may not be possible to make a booking with your desired changes.

  • How do I change the date or number of nights of my booking?

    If you need to change the dates or number of nights for your stay, please cancel your existing booking and make a new one.
    Please be aware that due to real-time changes in availability, it may not be possible to make a booking with your desired changes.

  • How do I change the room type of my booking?

    It is not possible to change the room type for an already-completed booking. Please cancel the existing booking and make a new booking.

  • How do I change my meal plan?

    It is not possible to change the meal plan for an already-completed booking. Please cancel the existing booking and make a new booking.
    Please be aware that due to real-time changes in availability, it may not be possible to make a booking with your desired changes.

    For concerns about food allergies or halal and vegetarian meals, please contact the facility directly.

    * Depending on the dates of the booking change or cancellation, you may be charged a cancellation fee.

  • How can I change the name of guests?

    It is not possible to change guests’ names.
    Please cancel the existing booking and make a new booking. Please be aware that due to real-time changes in availability, it may not be possible to make a booking with your desired changes.
    Also, please be aware that if the name on the booking differs from the name or spelling on the guest’s passport, you may be denied accommodation.

    Please inform the property directly of any changes when you check in. However, in the case that this booking will be used as a document for visa application, please cancel the existing booking and make a new booking.

General accommodation information
  • How do I book a non-smoking room?

    Room types which are non-smoking will have a non-smoking icon in the room plan information.
    Typically, ryokan (traditional Japanese-style inns) do not have specifically non-smoking rooms. These properties that only use deodorization to minimize the effect of smoke will not display the non-smoking icon.

  • What should I do if I will arrive later than the check-in time?

    If your check-in time will be later than the check-in time you indicated when you made your booking, please be sure to contact the property directly.
    If staying at a ryokan (Japanese-style inn), it is almost always necessary to check-in between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
    If you check-in after the scheduled time, it may not be possible to prepare your dinner for the day, so please plan to check-in with plenty of time to spare.
    Please note that even if your dinner is not prepared, no refunds for the accommodation fee can be offered.

  • Can I rent furnishings from the hotel?

    If you wish to rent the following items at your accommodation, please contact the property directly.
    ・ Baby products
    ・ Sporting goods
    ・ Microwave, etc.

    In addition, we will help you arrange for wheelchair assistance, so please contact Customer Support.

  • How do I make reservations for facilities within the hotel / ryokan?

    If you wish to make reservations for any of the following, please contact the property directly.
    ・ Private open-air bath rental
    ・ Aesthetic salon
    ・ Beauty salon
    ・ Parking lot
    ・ Use of restaurants not included in the room plan
    ・ Participating in events or activities held by the property

  • Can I drop my luggage off before check-in?

    Please contact the property directly regarding leaving your luggage before check-in.

  • Do you offer any interpretation services for contacting properties?

    JAPANiCAN.com does not provide interpreting services for contacting properties. Our apologies, but we ask you to arrange them yourself.

Payments and refunds
  • What cancellation fees apply?

    The timing of cancellation fees depends on the property, room plan, and product being booked.
    JAPANiCAN includes the timing of cancellation fees on the product details page as well as the information entry page when booking propertie, so please refer to this information when making your booking.

    Please note that cancellation fees cannot be waived if the customer cancels for any personal reason.

    * Please note that both partial and complete changes to the booking may result in cancellation fees depending on the timing of the change.

  • When will my refund be processed?

    Credit or debit card refunds may take time to process.
    The exact processing time and other details depend on the credit card, so please contact your credit card company directly.
    Please be aware that the company name listed on the details of the refund will be “JAPANICAN” (slight differences may occur).

     

    • Credit card
      Our system processes refunds immediately after the booking has been cancelled.
      However, it takes at least 10 days for refund requests from Japanese credit card companies to be processed to overseas credit card companies.
      Afterward, the return of funds to your account may take up to 1 to 2 months depending on the terms of use of your credit card company.
      For Payment-in-Advance Plans:
      Payment Calculated in JPY: You will first be refunded the initial amount charged for the reservation. If a cancellation fee is incurred, it will be charged separately.
      Payment Calculated in a Foreign Currency: The cancellation fee (if applicable) will be subtracted from the initial amount charged, and the remainder will be refunded to your credit card.
    • Debit card
      Details depend on the card company and bank, so please contact your card company directly.
  • Can I change my method of payment?
    • If you paid in advance (online by credit card), your card has already been charged, and changes afterward are not possible.
    • If you are paying on arrival (guarantee by credit card), you may be asked to submit your card as a deposit when you arrive.
      In addition, please note that some accommodations only accept payments by cash.
       
  • What fees or taxes are included in the price?

    Accommodation charges on JAPANiCAN.com include the following:
    ・ Room fee
    ・ Service fee
    ・ Consumption tax
    ・ Meal price (if included in the reservation details)

    The following are not included:
    ・ Bath tax that is charged when using a hot spring facility
    ・ Accommodation taxes charged in some cities

  • What is an "Accomodation Tax"?

    Accommodation taxes are taxes that are charged to guests staying in accommodation facilities in certain areas. These taxes are used to fund tourism promotion measures and are paid directly at the property.

    Tokyo Accommodation Tax
    An accommodation tax will be charged when staying at a ryokan (Japanese inn) or hotel in Tokyo.

    • If the “Room Fee” + “Service Fee” per person per night is less than JPY 10,000 : no tax
    • If the “Room Fee” + “Service Fee” per person per night is over JPY 10,000 but less than JPY 15,000 : JPY 100 per person per night
    • If the “Room Fee” + “Service Fee” per person per night is more than JPY 15,000 : JPY 200 per person per night

    ※ The fee for meals at the Japanese inn / hotel will not be subject to taxation.

     

    Osaka Prefecture Accommodation Tax
    An accommodation tax will be charged when staying at a ryokan (Japanese inn) or hotel in Osaka Prefecture.

    • If the “Room Fee” + “Service Fee” per person per night is less than JPY 10,000 : no tax
    • If the “Room Fee” + “Service Fee” per person per night is over JPY 10,000 but less than JPY 15,000 : JPY 100 per person per night
    • If the “Room Fee” + “Service Fee” per person per night is over JPY 15,000 but less than JPY 20,000 : JPY 200 per person per night
    • If the “Room Fee” + “Service Fee” per person per night is more than JPY 20,000 : JPY 300 per person per night

    ※ The fee for meals at the Japanese inn / hotel will not be subject to taxation.

     

    Kyoto City Accommodation Tax
    An accommodation tax will be charged when staying at any accommodation facility within Kyoto City, including facilities other than ryokan (Japanese inns) and hotels.

    • If the accommodation charge per person per night is less than JPY 20,000 : JPY 200
    • If the accommodation charge per person per night is over JPY 20,000 but less than JPY 50,000 : JPY 500
    • If the accommodation charge per person per night is more than JPY 50,000 : JPY 1,000

    Kanazawa City Accommodation Tax
    Starting from April 1, 2019, an accommodation tax will be charged when staying at any accommodation facility within Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture, including facilities other than ryokan (Japanese inns) and hotels.

    • If the accommodation charge per person per night is less than JPY 20,000 : JPY 200
    • If the accommodation charge per person per night is more than JPY 20,000 : JPY 500
  • What is a "Bath Tax"?

    A “bath tax” is a tax imposed on visitors to hot springs that provides funds for the establishment of environmental sanitation facilities, well protection management facilities, fire-fighting facilities and other necessary establishments for fire-fighting, as well as for tourism promotion and the establishment and maintenance of tourism facilities.

    Payment of this bath tax is mandatory when staying in applicable establishments with hot springs, even if you do not use the hot spring facilities. The tax is between 150 to 250 yen (depending on region) per person per night.
