Must-Visit Spots & Gourmet in the Kotohira Area

Built in 1835, this is Japan’s oldest surviving kabuki theater. The name “Kanamaru-za” was given in 1900. In 1970, it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property and renamed “Former Konpira Grand Theater.”

Affectionately called “Konpira-san,” this shrine is dedicated to the guardian deity of the sea and is also believed to bring blessings for health, medicine, and business. To reach the Main Shrine, you’ll climb 785 stone steps. (Gold amulets are available for purchase.)

To the right of the Main Shrine, a torii gate along the path from the observatory marks the entrance to Izutama Jinja, commonly known as “Okusha” or the Inner Sanctuary. The walk from the Main Shrine to Okusha is about 1.2 km and includes 583 additional stone steps. (Black amulets are available for purchase.)

Learn how to make authentic Sanuki-style hand-pulled udon from professional artisans. In just 40–60 minutes, you’ll knead the dough, roll it out, boil it, and then enjoy tasting your own creation. Nothing beats the flavor of udon you make yourself!

Located at the entrance to Konpira-san’s approach, Kinryo-no-Sato is a restored white-walled sake brewery dating back to 1789. The History and Culture Museum explains and recreates Edo-period sake brewing using life-size dolls and original tools. Free sake tasting is available.

Completed in 1860, this 27-meter-tall lantern is the tallest in Japan and is designated as a National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. A wooden lighthouse stands atop a high stone base, with a three-story interior. Graffiti from the Edo period can still be seen on its walls.
