Located in front of Okunoin, or the Mortuary Chapel, this inn is the perfect base for a visit to the temple. The Hon-bo, or priest's residential quarters, is a traditional-style temple, but the new building features the same facilities as a standard Japanese hotel.
- This facility is a temple lodging.
*Temple lodgings were originally accommodation facilities for Buddhist priests and practitioners, but they now also accept regular tourists.
A Buddhist temple is also located on site, so both staff and priests will offer hospitality to guests.
- Guests that reserve a plan that includes meals at this temple lodging can enjoy Buddhist vegetarian cuisine.
*Buddhist vegetarian cuisine follows Buddhist precepts and is prepared with vegetables, beans, and other plant derived ingredients.
- When staying at this temple lodging, guests can experience the following.
- Sutra Transcription: Transcribe Buddhist sutras.
- Religious Service: Observe a ritual where a Buddhist priest chants sutras, etc. (*Every morning from 6:30.)
- Okunoin Night Tour: Take a night stroll through Okunoin, the holy ground of Mount Koya. (*Tours led by a guide require a fee.)

We enjoyed our stay in this very basic but comfortable shukubo, close to the cemetery and a short walk from all other temples and shrines in the town. Lovely setting and tasty vegan food.

I would not recommend this place for a temple stay. This was our 3rd trip to Koyasan. Previously we stayed at Fudoin but they had no availability this time. We have traveled to Japan about 7 times now and stayed in many types of accommodation: homestay, ho

We had a wonderful, unforgettable time here. Of course this place will not be pristinely clean and sparkling since it is a +1000 year old temple. The futons were comfortable, and extra blankets were provided against the cold. To our pleasent surprise, we h

Understanding that we were visiting a working temple, we felt unwelcome and interloping during our stay. For the money charged, we should have stayed in a less expensive guest house. By contrast, we had a nicer room in Yunomine Onsen, for half the price,

the family room we got was very spacious, warm and confortable. Food is fine but cold. Good experience even though the shared time with the monks is not very long (30min at morning ceremony) and there was no English translation at all to explain anything;

We came from Osaka, so took the train to Hashimoto then took a bus to Koyasan station. From there, many local buses took us to the door stop of the shokubo. The staff speak very little English but enough for you to understand the temple inn rules and hours

Disappointing! We’ve read so many positive comments and don’t understand. There was nothing magical about this place : ( it was late December and everywhere except the room it was extremely cold. Long corridors with red carpet made us felt like in a hotel.

Good experience, nice atmosphere, friendly staff, unfortunately doesn't speak much English. Room was nice and reminded me of a Ryokan more than a temple. Close to Okunoin. Very pleasant experience overall.

Good value for money. Room smelled like pond water. Not sure why, could be because of the tatami floors not getting enough ventilation. Location is great, just steps away from Okunoin. Tip - go visit the cemetery in the twilight when the daylight crowds ar
