This temple used to be the Imperial Chamber for Emperor Shirakawa, now holding important Japanese national treasures for guests to view. Guests can enjoy rooms facing the bright new garden, with fusuma (Japanese-style sliding doors) covered with gold leaf.
- This facility is a temple lodging.
*Temple lodgings were originally accommodation facilities for Buddhist priests and practitioners, but they now also accept regular tourists.
A Buddhist temple is also located on site, so both staff and priests will offer hospitality to guests.
- Guests that reserve a plan that includes meals at this temple lodging can enjoy Buddhist vegetarian cuisine.
*Buddhist vegetarian cuisine follows Buddhist precepts and is prepared with vegetables, beans, and other plant derived ingredients.
- When staying at this temple lodging, guests can experience the following.
- Sutra Transcription: Transcribe Buddhist sutras.
- Buddhist Image Tracing: Copy Buddhist images.
- Religious Service: Observe a ritual where a Buddhist priest chants sutras, etc.
- Ajikan Meditation: Meditate while looking at the Sanskrit symbol for "A." (*Requires reservation in advance.)

Wonderful experience, would come back in a heartbeat! Great wifi. Easy access from the main road (bus stop and shops nearby). Warm greeting from the monks. Delicious food, different from one night to the next. Very nice morning ceremonies (dress warmly if

We stayed at Henjoko-in for two nights in late fall. The temperature was near freezing, but our room warm and comfortable. For a temple, our room was very luxurious - - - we had control over the heat, enough futons to layer for softness, and our own bath

It's the 4th time i stayed at Henjoko In. Because i loved it the past 3 times. This time the meals were taken in a big tatami room with all the other guests and not inside your room like before. I prefer in my room... Towels for Onsen were charged extra

The location and place are great. The best is the Buddhist ceremony we were invited to attend. The garden view was great. To be improved: quality of linen in the bedroom that look old and not clean. Bad: hospitality attitude from the monks. They are not

Tourist oriented. It was not the experience we were expecting. Food was not good and it was served in a room with other tourists. Monks do not interact with you at all. Morning ceremony was prepared for the tourists but we did not have the chance to assist

Very good service. Offers guided tour of the ceremonial hall, but explanation is constrained by limited English of the monk. Big clean room with modern toilet facility. Food was interesting and quite good, but not something we yearn to repeat because we ar

Once you visit Koya-san it becomes clear that there is fairly standardised way of staying. Get a 2 day park pass, train to Gokurakubashi, cable car and bus to a temple - most of which are closely colocated along the main road in koya. Henjokoin was easy

On one hand we loved the atmosphere of the temple, the people were nice, the room was great and dinner amazing. On the other hand we were disappointed by the lack of immersion and activities together with the monks. Providing leaflets or written explanatio

Food is good but it could be nice to have a minimum western choice for those who don't are used to japanese traditional food. As a suggestion, as I am a graphic designer: it would be very nice to have a brochure with explanations about bath, meals and tem

It had a great stay in Henjoko-in. The monks spoke good English and me knowing a bit a Japanese helped us to have a great communication. The location is really good specially if you want to walk around, and transportation is really easy. The food was abso

Room was good. The food very interesting. But overall the experience felt alien and detached, cold reception from staff/monks. Not sure how it measures up to other shukubo in Kōyasan, maybe it's supposed to be like this.
