This was a really fun and special part of our trip to Kyoto. Kawadoko -- or eating over the river -- is an experience usually reserved for those who speak Japanese. So we jumped at this opportunity.
Eating on the deck over the Kamo River was lovely, even if it was ultimately cut a bit short by some ill-timed rain. The staff ushered us into a room upstairs to finish our meal.
The food was excellent -- probably even better than the kaiseki we had in our ryokan on Miyajima Island. Even with relatively limited language in common, our servers were able to explain how to eat some of the more elaborate dishes.
I think there's a standard warning with traditional Japanese cuisine that it might not suit all Western pallets. We skew on the more adventurous side anyway, but I don't recall eating anything terrible unfamiliar. It was delicious!
If I have one complaint, it's the price. You're definitely paying a premium for the experience of eating on the river, but we’d do it again.
