Akan-Mashu National Park

A national park comprised of forests, lakes and volcanoes. It boasts of Lake Akan, where algae balls called marimo can be found, and breathtaking sceneries of three caldera lakes surrounded by coniferous forests. Many species of birds live here. Hot springs also well up from several areas.

Towada-Hachimantai
National Park

This area covers some of the country's most iconic natural wonders, Lake Towada and Oirase Stream; the broadleaf forests and alpine plants of Hachimantai; andmany more. There are also therapeutic hot springs in this area since ancient times.

Nikko National Park

This park features a diverse range of landscapes from the historical architecture of the Nikko Toshogu Shrine to the Lake Chuzenji area, a popular summer retreat up in the mountains. It is easily accessible as it is situated near the Greater Tokyo Area.

Ise-Shima National Park

This area consists of the Shima Peninsula, known for its exquisite scenery of an intricately formed ria coastline, as well as Ise Jingu, a symbol of faith and tradition since days of old. The mountains deep in the area are preserved for the forests where timber used to build the shrine was sourced. There are beech trees, cedar trees and Japanese red pine trees spread throughout.

Daisen-Oki National Park

This vast national park includes Mt. Daisen, the tallest peak in the Chugoku region; Hiruzen, where pastures spread across the highlands; the Oki Islands, made up of 180 large and small islands; Shimane Peninsula, where the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine is located; and the Sanbe Mountains lush with grasslands.

Aso-Kuju National Park

A national park consisting of volcanoes and grasslands. Mt. Aso, characterized by its large caldera, and the lava domes of the Kuju Mountains can be found here. Pasturing and controlled burning are practices the people continue to do on the vast grasslands covering the landscape. There are also many endemic species of plants and animals.

Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park

The Kirishima area is home to a cluster of over 20 volcanoes. Here, visitors can see crater lakes and fumes rising from the ground, and enjoy soaking in relaxing hot springs. The national park is characterized by sceneries formed by volcanic activity. It includes the Kinko Bay area with the Aira Caldera and the Sakurajima volcano on its southern edge; Cape Sata, where many subtropical plants grow; and Ibusuki, where the polygenetic volcano Kaimondake is located.

Yakushima National Park

Designated as a World Natural Heritage Site in December 1993, Yakushima is known for natural forests where Yakusugi, Japanese cedar trees over a thousand years old, can be found. The island is also home to a diverse range of plant life due to vertical distribution from the coastal area to Mt.Miyanoura, the highest peak in the Kyushu area at 1,936 meters.

Keramashoto National Park

This national park covers many coral reefs and some 30 islands large and small dotting the waters 40 km west of Naha City. Lay your eyes on exceptionally clear waters called "Kerama Blue," white sand beaches, many coral reefs, and a rich ecosystem. Humpback whales come to the seas here to breed and raise their calves. This is the fi rst national park where the ocean covers 7 km, the majority of the area.
