This is probably the best traditional hotel/ryokan we experienced so far in Japan. The entire hotel is probably not recent but our room was pristine: perfectly clean, and while keeping an old style charm was in very good shape without a scratch. The hotel is very quiet. The onsen was fantastic, at the right temperature with wooden bathtubs with a view over the river; there is even a very nice outside bath. Food was amazing: dinner was served in our room and consisted of a never ending series of small dishes including tender saga beef; breakfast was served in a common room which looked very nice and food was also delicious. From our room we had a view over a lovely Japanese garden. Service was perfect (even above the high Japanese standards): we don’t really speak Japanese, their English is limited and yet we felt so nicely welcome and pampered. Definitely a recommended place to stay in Karatsu.
