571 Koyasan, Koya-cho, Ito-gun, Wakayama Prefecture

by Tram Germany / 05 Apr 2019

We had a wonderful, unforgettable time here. Of course this place will not be pristinely clean and sparkling since it is a +1000 year old temple. The futons were comfortable, and extra blankets were provided against the cold. To our pleasent surprise, we had a privat bathroom and toilet as well, even though I didn't book it. The food was very interesting and varied, and actually vegan (I was served fish once in a different temple lodging), and staff took their time to explain every single item to us, very kind and caring. There is a booklet in every room with detailed information about Koyasan, the morning ritual, the venue, the food and some meditation practices as well. There was a table with a heat blanket and wifi in every room, too, and the view on the garden was amazing. They have two bikes you can borrow, and Okunoin is not even 5 min by foot. My only critique is that the hot bath was a little bit too hot.

Located in front of Okunoin, or the Mortuary Chapel, this inn is the perfect base for a visit to the temple. The Hon-bo, or priest's residential quarters, is a traditional-style temple, but the new building features the same facilities as a standard Japanese hotel.

- This facility is a temple lodging.
*Temple lodgings were originally accommodation facilities for Buddhist priests and practitioners, but they now also accept regular tourists.
A Buddhist temple is also located on site, so both staff and priests will offer hospitality to guests.

- Guests that reserve a plan that includes meals at this temple lodging can enjoy Buddhist vegetarian cuisine.
*Buddhist vegetarian cuisine follows Buddhist precepts and is prepared with vegetables, beans, and other plant derived ingredients.

- When staying at this temple lodging, guests can experience the following.
- Sutra Transcription: Transcribe Buddhist sutras.
- Religious Service: Observe a ritual where a Buddhist priest chants sutras, etc. (*Every morning from 6:30.)
- Ajikan Meditation: Meditate while looking at the Sanskrit symbol for “A”.
- Okunoin Night Tour: Take a night stroll through Okunoin, the holy ground of Mount Koya. (*Tours led by a guide require a fee.)

The above experiences are current as of Aug. 17, 2017.
Provision of the experiences may be cancelled or experiences may not be available depending on the day.
And depending on the type of experience, advance notice or a fee may be required, so for those interested in the experiences, please make sure to contact the temple lodging in advance for details.

Curfew is at 22:00 (entrance closed at 22:00). Check-in is until 18:00. Guests arriving past this time must call the hotel.
