This was our first ryokan experience and it was wonderful. The staff were really warm and welcoming. We appreciated Keiko's explanation of how to wear the yukata & other clothing items. The kaiseki dinner was fantastic, so delicious and beautifully presented. The Japanese breakfast was also excellent. We really enjoyed the family bath. Everything was extremely clean. It was very cold during our visit to Kyoto, so it felt great to be in that hot, steam-filled environment after walking around in the cold all day. The little private garden outside of our room was lovely too. Be aware that the access to the bathroom is outside (through the sliding doors, a couple of steps then you're inside your private bathroom). Ordinarily, this would not be a big deal, but it was pretty cold to pop out to use the toilet during this cold spell. On the plus side, the room is well-heated so you warm up quickly when you get back. It's a spurge but I would definitely stay at Motonago again!
