4.8/5 BEST REVIEW

by Kelsey United States of America / 18 May 2019

We had the best time during our stay celebrating our honeymoon! The staff were so friendly, courteous and helpful from the moment we arrived at the train station (they have a free shuttle to pick you up) and throughout our entire stay. We opted for a room with the open-air bath, which was a great way to relax and enjoy the view of the lake with some tea. This was the first onsen we’ve visited and the bar is now set very high! The facilities were top notch and we loved the private room, which was definitely worth the small extra fee to reserve. We also chose to do the kaiseki dinner, which blew us away! Every bite was incredible and an experience we will never forget. I hope to visit again the next time we return to Japan!

Located just a 20 minute train ride from Kyoto Station is Ogoto Onsen. This retro, natural hot springs ryokan is located near Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. The lodging features cuisine prepared with local ingredients such as Omi beef and more, as well as aromatherapy which is popular among female guests.
Ogoto Onsen is said to have been opened about 1,200 years ago in the Heian Period by Saicho, founder of the Enryaku-ji Temple on Mt. Hiei. The ryokan has gender-segregated large communal baths and open-air baths, as well as private open-air baths which guests can use for an additional fee. In addition to the standard Japanese-style rooms, there are also guestrooms equipped with open-air baths. The open-air baths in the special guestrooms use natural hot spring water.
