This was the highlight of our 14-day Japan trip. The location and rooms are beautiful. The food was incredible and unique, and the staff explained everything to us even though we speak almost no Japanese. The hot springs were perfect - just the right temperature and extremely relaxing. A night’s stay entitles you to 45 minutes in a private bath and unlimited access all night and morning to the gender-specific public bath.
The website has public transit directions in Japanese only. To get here, take a bus to Hirayu Onsen (平湯温泉) and then transfer to Ue Ji Gane Kogen (上地ヶ根高原), which is immediately in front of the ryokan. Don’t get out at Ue Ji Gane (上地ヶ根), which is the stop prior. Hirayu Onsen is a transit hub where you can buy the ticket for the final leg. Buses are very easy to use, with a screen displaying the next stop in Japanese and English. It can be hard to find the bus schedule on the bus company’s website, but the one on the ryokan’s website is accurate.
