Lovely setting, but very frustrating service. No one in the restaurant cared my mom had an allergy. After she had a reaction from the few things we thought were safe for her to eat I cancelled all meals for the following day. The receptionist said she would refund the meal cost(she stated this, I did not ask for a refund,but she offered one). Upon checkout I instead was given a bill and everyone pretended they didn’t speak a word of English and couldn’t understand. I understand Japan does not like food changes. I took Japanese for several years so I did my best to communicate, (I can understand about 2/3s and speak 1/3 so I communicated well enough in Japanese) but there was an air of ‘we don’t care’ that I was shocked by. I highly recommend Hakone as it is a beautiful setting, but I paid 250 a night for a rundown room full of spiders with no toilet or bathroom and lukewarm service. I hope to redo this stay in Hakone another time at a different ryokan.
