Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake formed approximately 40,000 years ago by volcanic activity. In addition to being among the clearest lakes in all of Japan, its waters are also the second deepest in the nation. With lovely scenery that changes with each of the four seasons, it is a perfect place to experience the unspoiled natural beauty of Hokkaido.
Let time slip away and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Lake Shikotsu. On fair weather days, your shadows will refllect off the surface of the transparent water, creating the impression that your canoe is floating in mid-air.
Feel as if you've taken flight with a pleasurable dive into the waters of Lake Shikotsu. You'll catch glimpses of kokanee salmon, rainbow trout, and other freshwater fish for whom the lake is a natural habitat.
Experience bountiful forests and mountain landscapes within Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Gazing at the lake from a different perspective will reveal its charms in a whole new way.
