Goryokaku Park

Stunning panoramic views of blossoms amongst the ruins of a 17th-century fort

Goryokaku was a western-style fort built by the Tokugawa shogunate (1857-66) in the harbour city of Hakodate. The fort, one of the largest ever constructed in Japan, was the center of action in the war between the last remnants of the Tokugawa clan and the new Meiji government. The star-shaped ruins of the fort is now a park full of cherry blossom trees.

Travel back in time while wandering a path surrounded by sakura

The beautiful weeping cherry trees and the classic samurai residences lining this street in Kakunodate, Akita, have a history stretching back over 300 years. The trees, said to have been transplanted from Kyoto, enjoy national protection due to their pedigree. Come sakura season in April, the area's best feature is the 2 km (1.2 mi) stroll through the magnificent tunnel of flowering trees lining the Hinokinai River.

Hirosaki Castle

Visit historic Hirosaki Castle and one of Tohoku's biggest cherry blossom festivals

With a 400-year history and almost 2,600 cherry blossom trees within its grounds, Hirosaki Castle in Aomori Prefecture serves as a beautiful example of traditional Japan. For the perfect picture, walk along the castle's western moat to capture the bright red Shunyo Bridge, stately castle tower, pale pink sakura, and snow-crested Mt. Iwaki. The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival is usually held every year from 23 April to 5 May, dates varying.

Kenrokuen Garden

One of Japan's most beautiful gardens features a rare variety of sakura

Kenrokuen, designed around 1671, is considered one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. All plant life within the garden has been specifially arranged to present the most pleasing views possible from the many tea houses located throughout the grounds. Among Kenrokuen Garden's 420 cherry trees is a rare species that blooms in overwhelming 300-petal flowers.

Tochigi

Mt. Ohira

More than 4,000 cherry trees blossom at this mountain near the popular destination of Nikko

Sweeping views across the Kanto Plains are available from atop Tochigi's Mt. Ohira. The mountain also features an undisturbed shinto shrine and a park with 4,000 cherry blossom trees. The blossoming trees in spring create a 2 km (1.6 mi) walkway encircled by pink sakura petals.
