Gora Onsen

The development of Gora Hot Spring began in 1894 with hot spring water being pumped through pipes from Mt. Soun, and full scale construction of the hot spring started in 1912. Once the Hakone Tozan Tetsudou Railway(mountain trams) services began in 1919, this region prospered as a high-class villa district and a hot spring retreat. Nowadays these villas have become vacation houses and hotels, but the atmosphere of the early days clearly remains. The French-style symmetric garden opened in 1914, "Hakone Gora Park," is a landmark in Gora which has changed with the times.

Ibusuki Onsen

Take a special steam sand bath in the tropical mood. It's true healing!

Ibusuki, located at the southeastern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, is a hot spring resort which has long been proud of its abundant hot spring water. Today the hot water still runs through pipes from dozens of hot springs sources to reach each resident of the city supplying naturally occurring hot spring water in their own homes. Ibusuki has various hot spring facilities, such as open air baths with ocean views. It is especially well known for its natural steaming sand baths heated by underground geysers, where bathers wearing kimono lie covered up to their necks in sand causing them sweat all over. This has been proved to have therapeutic effects both for health and beauty.

Hyogo
Kinosaki Onsen

The traditional spa resort known from the 7th century. Try 7 different public hot springs.

Kinosaki hot spring, revered for nearly 1,300 years, was also a favorite resort of the Japan's great writers Shiga Naoya and Shimazaki Toson. One of the highlights of Kinosaki is a visit to the seven hot spring bathhouses. As well as touring the seven bathhouses, other attractions such as nice cafes, souvenir shops, "Bungeikan" (art and literature museum), a shooting gallery for kids and pin ball machine parlor are available . On the outskirts of the town is Kinosaki Cable Car which goes to Onsenji Temple and the peak of Mt. Daishi, which is busy with tourists throughout the year.

Bikes can be rented from the Ryokan Information Center (Tourist Information Center) for 800 yen a day. A visit to Kinosaki Bungeikan, the art and literature museum is recommended. Have a refreshing drink from the hot spring water fountain, reputedly good for health, located at the cable car starting point in Yakushi Park, where you can also have a refreshing footbath and relaxing rest.

Shimane
Tamatsukuri Onsen

Calm & historic onsen town near Iwami Silver Mine, the World Heritage site.

Tamatsukuri hot spring is located 2 km upstream along the Tamayu River from Lake Shinji. According to Japanese mythology, this hot spring was discovered by Sukunahikona-no-mikoto, who created the country of Japan with Okuninushi-no-mikoto. In the myth the therapeutic properties of the hot spring are described, making bathers become healthier and more beautiful. This area is also known for its agate mine and it's possible to visit the site of an ancient jeweler's factory and experience making the ancient accessories, magatama (comma-shaped jewels). Both modern high rise and traditional Japanese style hotels stand along the Tamayu River and there is a foot bath by the riverside which is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom season.

Take a pleasant stroll along the river, visit the foot bath, and then visit Izumo Tamatsukuri Historic Park. It is conveniently located near Matsue, Lake Shinji, and Izumo Taisha Shrine for your sightseeing convenience.

Shimoda Onsen

The spa full of a port town atmosphere, with a natural landscape of mountains & ocean.

Shimoda is famous as the place where Commodore Matthew Perry of the U.S. Navy arrived with his "black ships" in 1853. Its hot springs, including Rendaiji, Kawachi, Shirahama, and Kannon Onsen, are also popular. Hot spring water, mainly from Rendaiji, is pumped into downtown Shimoda and Shirahama. The towns have excellent pumping technology, and the hot spring is also enjoyed in Suzaki and Oura despite its distance from the hot spring sources. There are several places of historical interest related to how Japan opened its doors to foreign countries, and the old houses with traditional Namako walls are a reminder of those days. There are approximately 150,000 hydrangea plants, (three million hydrangea blossoms) in full bloom at the Hydrangea Festival in Shimoda Park, from June 1 to 30, every year.

Yamanaka Onsen

Famous for lacquerware. Enjoy nature's bounty and experience of craft making.

Yamanaka Hot Spring Town is famous for its hot springs and lacquer ware. The Haiku Poet, Matsuo Basho, who wrote "Narrow Road to the Deep North" visited and admired one of the hot springs here. Yamanaka lacquer ware has a 400 year history and is popular for its elegant and practical design. Many hot spring hotels stand along the Daishoji River offering views of beautiful nature in all seasons. The view of Kakusen Gorge is especially breathtaking. Craft experiences are available at some of the many galleries on Yuge-kaido street and sightseers staying at hotels can enjoy touring several hot spring bathhouses by bus.

Naruko Onsen

Gaining more popularity! The spa boasts a wide variety of spring qualities.

Naruko Onsen Villages is a cluster of four villages - Naruko, East Naruko, Nakayamadaira, and Kawatabi - with abundant hot spring water. The hot springs were discovered in the Heian era (794-1185). The reputed beneficial qualities of the springs make them especially popular with people in ill health. The qualities of Naruko hot springs are so diverse that Naruko Onsen lacks only two (carbonated water and radioactivity) out of eleven identified qualities of the hot springs in Japan. Each hotel has its own hot spring source and their guests may enjoy bathing as much as they want. Many hotels and souvenir shops are located on the gentle slope making it pleasant to stroll around the town between the hot spring tours.

Toyako Onsen

Enjoy the wonderful landscape of Lake Toya & fire works festival.

Toyako Onsen takes pride in its abundant hot spring water and numerous hotels and inns, which draw over four million tourists a year. In 1910, hot springs were first discovered here following the volcanic activities of Mt. Yosomi and Mt. Usu. By 1917 Toya town had developed into a hot spring resort. This area suffered extensive damage as a result of an eruption on Mt. Usu in 2000, but now the city has been completely restored and is crowded with sightseers. Take a relaxing hot spring bath viewing the magnificent scenery including Mt. Yotei, (also known as Mt. Ezo Fuji) and Mt. Showashin-zan with its rising smoke. The landscape surrounding Lake Toya is one of the three greatest viewing points in Hokkaido.

"Long-Run Fireworks Night" is a colorful on-the-lake fireworks display held every night from the end of April to the end of October. The hot springs tour of Hokkaido, in which tourists start from Sapporo and visit Lake Toya, Noboribetsu, and Lake Shikotsu, is highly recommended.

Hokkaido
Jozankei Onsen

Attractive seasonal changes in the beauty of the ravine, near Sapporo.

Jozankei Hot Spring is one of the oldest in Hokkaido. It is said that Mizumi Jozan, a Buddhist monk from Bizen (Okayama Prefecture), discovered the springs in 1866 and proposed the development of a hot spring resort. The Jozankei Railway line opened in 1913 and a steam engine ran between Sapporo and Jozankei, taking two hours and 15 minutes. Later this was replaced by an electric rail system, shortening the travel time to one hour which contributed to the rapid development of the Jozankei Resort. However in 1969 the railway ceased to operate, and nowadays visitors travel to Jozankei by car. Scenic spots around Jozankei are also popular.
