A trip to Takyama is a like trip back in time. Cliche? Some cliches exist for a reason. This mountainous region has long been insulated from the rest of Japan geographically and culturally. Only recently have many Japanese travelers, let alone foreign visitors, begun venturing to Takayama. There they have the opportunity to enter homes roofed in the traditional gassho-zukuri style, view the beauty of Japan's "Northern Alps," and even pick up an adorable "sarubobo," a popular doll unique to the area. These ryokan provide access to all of these things, so go ahead and take a trip to Takayama, a trip back in time.

All prices listed are per night / per room for 2 people including dinner & breakfast.
Rooms and meals may vary depending on the ryokan.

A traditional Japanese-style tatami room.
Established over seventy years ago, this ryokan is alive with the spirit of the Hida area. From its design to its furniture, every elements exudes tradition. The cuisine also boasts a distinctly Hida flavor: famous Hida beef and houba miso (magnolia leaves grilled with miso and Welsh onion) are just two examples of the unique delicacies that await guests. Fresh fish and vegetables taken right from the surrounding area also give visitors a chance to experience the seasonal tastes of Takayama.
Hida Takayama onsen's exceptional quality is on display at Ryokan Tanabe. Waters that smooth the skin and a fresh forest fragrance that soothes the heart are just two examples of the natural splendor that overflows from the heart of Ryokan Tanabe. With various types of Japanese-style baths, including gorgeous outdoor baths, this ryokan offers something to satisfy all manner of traveler.
This was our first Ryokan experience. We had such a wonderful time. The owners were so kind and helpful. We would travel back to Japan just to stay at this Ryokan.

Tanabe's rustic exterior greets guests.
Traditional Japanese communal space.

East meets West. Beds meet Tatami. This ryokan offers the best of both worlds.
A Japanese-style city hotel. A combination of the best aspects of hotels and ryokan. These are two ways one could describe the unique fusion that is Hida Hanasato no Yu Takayama Ouan. It even has traditional tatami-floored rooms with beds in them. A trip to the shared bath on the 13 floor yields a breathtaking view of Takayama town and Japan's "Northern Alps." The hotel's breakfast buffet, featuring local ingredients, is another popular item, though plans without meals are also available.
Everything was extremely clean and modern with very lovely Japanese-style touches. The breakfast buffet was great with all the Japanese food we like.

This stunning outdoor bath offers an unparalleled view.

A traditional Japanese room.
This ryokan, renovated in 2002, offers modern facilities with a traditional atmosphere harkening back to Takayama's past. Its cypress and granite baths draw on the hot-spring waters of nearby Hida-Takayama onsen, and both large indoor and open-air baths are available. Meals at Koto no Yume offer the finest in service and hospitality. Please note that while vegetarian dining options are available, guests must contact the ryokan in advance with their request. Conveniently, is just a two-minute walk from JR Takayama Station.
This is a fairly modern ryokan, charmingly decorated in the communal areas. Friendly and courteous service - we liked that if you ring down to reception, someone will come and show you how to put on your yukata. You get to pick your favourite ones to wear from a beautiful selection. Food was exquisitely presented and delicious (a western buffet is available I think if preferred for breakfast). Located very close to the station, and very convenient for enjoying Takayama.

Each room is meticulously prepared.
Honjinhiranoya Kachoan is conveniently located by many tourist attractions, for example the red bridge and old private houses. It is the perfect place to stay to make your trip to Hida Takayama even more enjoyable. You will enjoy the highest service while staying in a room prepared with traditional aesthetic sensitivity to the four seasons. The accommodation is also a mere seven-minute walk from Takayama Station, and pick-up service is available.
We have stayed over 20 ryokans in Japan over the years, and this was one of the best in terms of food and service. The location is excellent, being at the center of the town. Three different types of baths were available to women, and were excellent.
